[Manufacturing Division] Full-Scale Expansion of Next-Generation Electronic Material mPPO Business

KOLON Industries

2025.06.27

Kolon Industries (CEO Heo Sung) is accelerating the supply of next-generation electronic materials used in future technologies such as ultra-high-speed communications and artificial intelligence (AI).

Kolon Industries announced on the 27th that it would invest around 34 billion won to build new production facilities for mPPO (modified Poly Phenylene Oxide), a next-generation copper-clad laminate (CCL) material, at its Gimcheon Plant 2. The facilities are scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2026.

CCL serves as a core component of printed circuit boards (PCBs), functioning to block electrical signals. Electrical signals are transmitted through the circuits on the CCL, during which minute signal loss can occur. This leads to reduced speed and heat generation, making the application of CCL with superior power-saving performance essential for ultra-high-performance PCBs used in AI semiconductors and 6G communication devices. mPPO is a high-value material offering top-tier power-saving performance, with electrical insulation capabilities three to five times superior to those of epoxy resins used for the same purpose.

The future market outlook is also bright. Cisco's annual Internet Report forecasts global data usage will increase from 470 exabytes (EB) per month in 2024 to 900 EB by 2030. Accordingly, the mPPO market is also expected to expand from about 4,600 tons this year to about 9,700 tons by 2030. Kolon Industries plans to proactively respond to this growing demand through business expansion and further strengthen its position in the high-value-added electronic materials market.

A Kolon Industries official stated, “This investment is to proactively respond to the growing electronic materials market,” adding, “Kolon Industries plans to continue enhancing profitability by expanding high-value-added product lines”.
