Kolon Industries will showcase their hydrogen fuel cell components and materials at the world’s largest hydrogen industry exhibition. The senior management team including the CEO Kim Young-beom are planning to visit the event to examine hydrogen-related technology trends and explore future business directions for the company.

The World Smart Energy Week 2024 will be held from 28th February to 1st March at Big Sight in Tokyo, Japan, under the theme of ‘Membrane Solution for H2’. Kolon Industries announced on the 29th that they would exhibit their key products such as membrane humidifiers, Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM), membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and membrane-based material (VENT).

The World Smart Energy Week 2024 is the energy industry’s biggest event. Since the first event held in Japan in 2005, this annual fair has featured sectors such as hydrogen and fuel cells, solar power, secondary batteries, and smart grids. This year, over 1,600 companies are expected to participate in the exhibition attracting over 70,000 visitors.

Kolon Industries have been researching membranes used as separators since 1989 and have accumulated their expertise in the highly scalable field of membranes for water treatment. Since 2005, the company has been conducting R&D on hydrogen fuel cells and has established a mass production system for water control devices, a key component for hydrogen vehicles, a first in Korea, to supply to Hyundai Motors. At this exhibition, the company is showcasing high-power products in the 100kW and 200kW class, and is seeking to expand beyond mobility into power generation and industrial applications.

In addition, since 2020, Kolon Industries have been mass-producing polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs), a core component of fuel cells for hydrogen vehicles, and have also established a production base for membrane electrode adhesives (MEAs). Further, in order to respond to the global environmental regulations on PEAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), the company plans to start developing PEM and MEA materials for hydrocarbon-based fuel cells and water electrolysis.

“We are pleased to showcase the applications of our various membrane technologies at the world’s largest energy industry exhibition,” said Kim Young-beom, CEO of Kolon Industries. “We will continue to expand our technologies beyond conventional fuel cells into water electrolysis with a view to contributing to future sustainability.”

The exhibition will also feature Kolon’s vent products which are applied to smartphones, automobiles and microphones. Vent is used to provide pressure balance, waterproof and dustproof functions which enhance the reliability of electrical and electronic components.
