Kolon Industries and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources join hands in space resources development

Kolon Industries (CEO, Kim Young-beom) is making a full-fledged foray into space. The company signed a business agreement (MOU) on the 4th with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (President, Lee Pyeong-gu) at the Kolon One & Only Tower in Magok, Seoul. The two parties agreed to discover and develop new materials needed to undertake resource exploration and extraction in the extremes of the space environment. The collaboration aims to develop the materials needed to support the government initiative to launch a Korean moon lander in 2032. 

Kolon Industries possesses a differentiated range of next-generation material technologies. By reviewing the application of the wear and heat resistant amorphous alloy, ‘Atometal’, to the external coating of the lunar exploration robot, the company intends to prove the technology under extreme temperatures and vacuum conditions. This will provide a stepping stone for Kolon Industries to become a first mover in the domestic and global space industries.

At the signing ceremony, CEO Kim said, “We expect great synergy from open innovation with the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources”, and added, “Following verification of this technology through the development of space resources, we intend to expand this capability to a number of different fields in the future.”

Lee Pyeong-gu, Director of the Institute, said, “This business agreement has great significance as a first step towards space resource exploration technology. We intend to provide our full support and cooperation to promote the application of government-funded research to space development in both the public and private sectors.” 

Meanwhile, Kolon Industries attended the Space Resources Exploration & Development Network Forum held at JW Marriott Seoul on the same day. Some forty institutions representing industry, academia and research participated in the event, including Hanwha Aerospace, Korea University, Inha University, and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.
