Kolon Industries signs a tripartite MOU for development of biodegradable plastic PHA technology

▷ Cooperating with a group construction affiliate, Kolon Global, and a Dutch startup 
▷ Enabling mass production of PHA, a next-generation eco-friendly material that is 100% ocean biodegradable
▷ Establishing a resource circulation system through food waste recycling technology 
 
Kolon Industries (CEO, Kim Young-beom) revealed on the 23rd that it had signed a tripartite MOU to develop biodegradable plastic technology with Kolon Global, a construction affiliate, and Paques Biomaterials (Paques Bio hereinafter), a Dutch startup specializing in the development of eco-friendly materials. 

The three companies will focus on the development of mass production technology and a business framework for PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate) – a next-generation eco-friendly plastic material.

Based on original technology owned by Paques Bio, Kolon Industries plans to work with Kolon Group to develop PHA mass production technology in Korea, build a food waste recycling facility, and set up a PHA production system. Paques Bio has the technology to make PHA from food waste. By combining Kolon Industries’ biodegradable plastic manufacturing know-how and Kolon Global’s expertise in the construction and operation of environmental treatment facilities, the tripartite agreement is expected to accelerate the commercialization of PHA products in Korea.

PHA is a natural substance produced by microorganisms using plant ingredients. Among various biodegradable materials, it has demonstrated the best decomposition performance in natural environments such as soil and sea, rather than under specific conditions. Since it is 100% biodegradable in the ocean, PHA is attracting attention as a solution to microplastic pollution and the reduction of carbon emissions. 

Kim Young-beom, the CEO of Kolon Industries, noted that “This cooperation is significant in that it will enable us to secure both the resources and technology for producing eco-friendly materials domestically. We will continue to take the lead in establishing a resource circulation system that utilizes waste materials.”

Kim Jung-il, CEO of Kolon Global, also explains that “An environmental treatment facility combining our waste treatment technology and the PHA production technology will enable us to kill two environmental birds with one stone by processing waste and obtaining high value-added materials at the same time.”

Joost Paques, CEO of Paques Bio, added that “Kolon, which already possesses many eco-friendly plastic technologies, is a very important global partner for us. This agreement will lead to a full commercialization of PHA through mass production.” 

Meanwhile, Kolon Industries has pursued a number of eco-friendly plastic businesses leveraging its own technology and external cooperation, such as 100% plant-based bio material PEF, chemically recycled PET (CR-PET), and biodegradable plastic material PBAT.
