▷ Doubled aramid pulp production capacity at Gumi Plant to 3,000 tonnes
▷ Responding to the growing demand for dust-reducing brake pad materials following tightened environmental regulations
▷ Focusing on high value-added product markets with the largest aramid yarn in Korea
Kolon Industries (CEO & President Kim Young-bum) has successfully completed the expansion of its aramid pulp plant and is accelerating its efforts to tap into the market for high-value-added products.
Kolon Industries announced on the 13th that it had invested approximately KRW 22 billion in its Gumi plant in Gyeongsangbuk-do to significantly expand its annual production of aramid pulp from 1,500 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes, and was now gearing up to supply customers with the highest quality products.
Aramid pulp is a product made into crumbs by applying physical friction to aramid yarn and is mainly used as a reinforcing material for automotive parts such as brake pads, gaskets and tires.
Aramid yarn is known as a ‘super fiber’ because it is strong enough to stop bullets, and heat and abrasion resistant to withstand friction and high temperatures of over 500 degrees Celsius. It is also considered a high value-added product with a significant barrier to entry that requires complex manufacturing processes and advanced technology.
In particular, brake pads with aramid pulp can reduce dust particles by 70 per cent compared to existing products, making it possible to comply with Euro 7 (European automotive environmental regulations), which will be implemented in November 2026. As the one & only company that can mass-produce aramid pulp in Korea, Kolon Industries plans to start delivering the product from next month after completing trial runs.
Kolon Industries doubled its aramid production capacity from 7,500 tonnes to 15,310 tonnes at the end of last year to become the country's largest producer of aramid yarn.
