Kolon Industries expanding aramid pulp capacity to actively respond to the electric vehicle era

Kolon Industries (CEO, Kim Young-beom) is keeping pace with the strengthening of global environmental regulations and the growth of the electric vehicle market by expanding the supply of aramid pulp.

Kolon Industries revealed on the 10th that it would invest some 22 billion won to expand the aramid pulp production line at its Gumi plant. This represents an active response to the dust reduction requirement following the tightening of the EUR07 emissions standards scheduled to be introduced in 2025. In addition, Kolon Industries intends to respond to the demand for greater quietness in vehicles following the growth of the global electric vehicle market.   
Once expansion is completed, the company will be able to establish a system for producing a total of 3,000 tonnes of aramid pulp. In particular, it plans to provide customers with a wider range of options by extending the entry-level product range in addition to the provision of new premium lines. 

Aramid pulp is made by cutting the aramid yarn and applying physical friction to form crumbs. Aramid, a material with more than five times the strength of steel of the same weight, has high heat and wear resistance, and is used as a reinforcing material in vehicle components, such as brake pads, clutches and gaskets.     
In particular, NAO (Non-Asbestos Organic) brake pads using aramid pulp as a reinforcement material are eco-friendly since dust is reduced by 70% compared to existing brake pads made using steel fiber. In addition, brake pads based on aramid pulp have advantages in terms of noise reduction, excellent braking power, and increased durability. Kolon Industries plans to expand the application of aramid pulp to tire rubber reinforcement as well as to composite materials used in aerospace.
 
Noh Soo-yong, Head of the aramid business division of Kolon Industries: “Once the expansion of aramid yarn production line is completed, we will be able to bring forward the full-scale supply of aramid pulp. By diversifying our aramid business portfolio, we will become the foremost choice of our customers.” 
 
Meanwhile, Kolon Industries has made continuous investments to consolidate its top-tier position in the aramid market. It is currently undertaking a project to double its production capacity from 7,500 tonnes to 15,000 tonnes per annum, aiming for completion in the second half of this year. This expansion will enable the company to preemptively respond to the rapid growth in demand from high-tech industries, such as 5G communication networks and electric vehicles.
